What is a refugee?

Task 1.

Research and write an explanation of what an asylum seeker and a refugee is - what is the difference between the two terms?

Task 2.
Write an expectation of which countries accept the most refugees - think about spatial patterns (which continents will have the most) and development patterns (ACs, LIDCs etc.).

Now that you have written down what you expect to find, do some research on global refugee patterns and which countries are home to the most refugees. What did you find? Was it what you expected?

Task 3.
Use https://www.worldvision.org/refugees-news-stories/syrian-refugee-crisis-facts and your own research to investigate the Syrian refugee crisis. Is there anything we could do as a school to show our empathy for the plight of Syrian refugees?

  1. 1)An asylum seeker is someone wanting to leave their country in order to feel safe, and escape the danger in their own country, but their claim for refugee status is pending. Whereas a refugee is someone that is outside there country of origin due to persecution of their race, religion, nationality or membership to a particular social or political group.

2)Expectation: I would expect that ACs were the ones that take in more immigrants than LIDCs as ACs offer education and job prospects for LIDC people that LIDCs do not have.
Reality: From 2000 to 2008 the majority of immigration took place between LIDC citizens immigrating to ACs, whereas from 2008 the majority of migration has taken place between LIDC countries. This may be because of the increase in immigration restriction in ACs. (https://www.fastcompany.com/40423720/watch-the-movements-of-every-refugee-on-earth-since-the-year-2000)

3)Since March 15 2011 Syria has endured a 7 year humanitarian crisis, with 13.1 million people in the country needing humanitarian assistance. Healthcare centres and hospitals, schools, utilities, and water and sanitation systems are damaged or destroyed. This means the Syrian people are currently deprived of essential and basic services. The war has cause the largest refugee and displacement crisis of our time. More than 5.6 million Syrians have fled the country as refugees, and 6.1 million are displaced within Syria, and half of these people are children. As a school to show our empathy to the people affected by this we could raise awareness about the crisis so more people understand why it’s crucial to help. Then we could have a fundraiser day in order to raise funds to help those affected, and to show our support and how we want to help the affected, to those in need.

  2. 1) A refugee leaves their country of birth due to often hostility and ill-treatment for many different reasons. An asylum seeker is different. They want to escape their country also but their attempt to be a refugee is ongoing.

    2) I thought that the western European countries would accept the most immigrants because there would be a higher demand to move there. I found that the countries accepting the most immigrants are developed countries which went with my expectation.

    3) As a school I think we could raise money for Syrian refugees as they are lacking humanitarian aid. Money raised could help to increase the aid they have.

  3. 1) A refugee is someone who has been forced to leave their country due to escape war or other reasons such as persecution. Which is different to an asylum seeker which is a person who has left their home country as a political refugee and is seeking asylum in another.
    2) My expectation is that most immigrants will be going to western Europe in areas like the UK Germany or France. i Found that most immigrants as i expected moved to more wealthy countries which sometimes had welfare or benefits or were just wealthy. This is because they can get into those countries and possibly get jobs and have a better life with the fact they have a job and a better home.
    3) In 2011 The Syrian civil war began which has led to 7 years of fighting. This has continued for a long time and led to a lot of deaths and fighting between people in Syria. One way we could help is if we raised money as or school and possibly even raise awareness for the fact that the Syrian war is still going on and no one even realises it or they don't care about the fact that it's still happening to this day. so we need to make sure that people realise its still going on to this day, and that it's a horrific thing creating massive amounts of war refugees immigrating to other countries usually in Europe

  4. 1) An asylum seeker is someone who has left their home country in order to escape due to a war, political movement or conflict, and has legally found somewhere to live in another country. A refugee is very similar, this is purely someone fleeing from a country for similar reasons to an asylum seeker.

    2) I would expect that Western European countries would accept a lot of refugees, particularly the UK and Germany, along with Middle Eastern countries near to Syria that are a little more stable e.g Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon. I would also expect that ACs would take more immigrants than EDCs and ACs.
I found that it was mostly European countries that take in the most refugees most recently, such as the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands and Sweden. Canada was high on the list which surprised me, I wouldn't have expected them to take in many. Jordan also is home to around 600,000 Syrian refugees. Lebanon also is home to over 1 million refugees, despite being a very small country.

    3) Since the civil war and political unrest that really took off in Syria in 2011, millions of Syrian refugees have been displaced across Europe and the Middle East. Germany has accepted over 1 million refugees and other in Europe have allowed hundreds and thousands to immigrate. Also, countries like Jordan and Lebanon house millions - although this is often in tents and temporary housing in bad conditions. In terms of Waingels, I think that we can do things like cake sales to raise money for the Syrian refugees and the charities who support them. This would help to show our sympathy for refugees.
