Honduras migrant caravan

As some of you will know (and be sick of hearing!), I lived in Honduras a few years ago. Honduras is currently in the news worldwide due to the 'human caravan' attempting to make its way from Honduras, through Guatemala and Mexico, to the USA.

I have really enjoyed reading your comments from the first two posts on this blog, so lets have some more discussion and share your ideas to these questions in the comments:

1. In your opinion, why are the migrants attempting to leave their country and get to the USA?
2. In your opinion, is this the correct was for these people to seek a better standard of living?
3. President Trump has said that in response, the USA will cut aid to Honduras. Do you think this is the right way to respond? If not, how else should the USA deal with this situation?

  1. 1) Personally, I think the migrants are attempting to leave their country to move to the USA in order for better job and education prospects, as the USA has higher wages and more job prospects and better educational opportunities.
    2) In my opinion I think this is a good way to improve the standard of living, but not the best. I think this because it has attracted media attention to the occasion, which will in turn attract world-wide attention to the poor standard of living in Honduras prompting the government to improve it.
    3) I think that that is completely the wrong decision made by Trump because it will just cause the standard of living to decrease further without the help and therefore cause more people to want to move to the USA than before as the situation in Honduras has been made worse. Instead the USA should increase the aid it provides to improve the standard of living, and hold talks with Honduras to help them to understand how to improve their standard of living themselves, and then once the standard of living has improved, the amount of aid can start to decrease.

  2. 1) USA is a more lucrative place to live. It would be seen as a kind of a promised land in Honduras and they would see a way of improving their live by attempting to move there.

    2) I think it is understandable for them to want to seek a better standard of living but it is unfair on the US to receive an influx of unexpected Honduras migrants. There must be better alternatives to this.

    3) In my opinion, Trump is incorrect as it could cause the standard of living to fall further in Honduras, making America an even more attractive option for them to move to. I don't think Honduras is USA's issue to deal with however, rather there is a worldwide issue of poverty and it would be difficult to focus on one country.

  3. 1) The migrants firstly are doing this to leave Honduras. They have reasons for this - Honduras is an LIDC with a high level of its residents living in poverty, while it also contains some of the most dangerous cities in the world in terms of homicide rates. Despite a 30% decrease since 2011, Honduras has a homicide rate of 6 per every 10,000 people per year. Meanwhile a country like the USA currently has a homicide rate of just 0.49 per 10,000 people. This shows that the USA is much safer than Honduras, which is a reason why so many Hondurans would emigrate there. Also, the US has a much better economy and in most areas many more job opportunities than Honduras, where it is much easier and more likely to earn a higher wage.

    2) I think this is fine, as long as the Hondurans entering the USA have the right to do so e.g. a passport, and are legal to enter the USA. The vast majority of people who can legally enter a country are largely unlikely to be anything other than beneficial to the economy, but I think that if an immigrant is illegal, then they do not have a right to enter the USA as they are breaking the law, and a portion of illegal immigrants may not have the qualifications or skills to have a job in the USA. In my opinion, as long as emigration to the USA is legal, then this is a good way for Hondurans to seek a better standard of living. There are few other countries in the world where quality of life is as good as the USA.

    3) I think that this is the wrong way to respond. President Trump cutting off aid to Honduras is just being unfair on the country itself - just because many are emigrating to the USA from a country, it does not mean that the people of that poorer country should be deprived of aid and in many cases basic human necessities. I think that the aid given to Honduras should remain the same, and the President could perhaps make his country more accessible to Honduran people e.g. provide more jobs and places for these people to work and get an education, but also he should not just allow them all to enter the country freely unless they are legally allowed to do so. Cutting off aid to Honduras is going too far the other way though, and I wouldn't agree with him doing that, as it would only drive more Hondurans to leave the country that is in such a dire state.

  4. 1) I think that the reason why the migrants are leaving Honduras is because of the fact that they believe there are more job opportunities and chances for them there in the USA. Also in the belief they could possibly live a better life as there are benefits and welfare state benefits. Also the fact that their families will be able to receive better education and better help from the country they will be moving to. This will help as they will get out of the cycle of their children/families doing cheap low skilled work, moving to places where they can do higher skilled work.
2)I think it isn't the best of ideas however it is the only real reasonable opportunity they have to get out of their LIDC countries and get into more AC countries which are more developed and wealthy compared to their southern american homeland. So i believe it's the only real chance they will get at living a better life outside of their own home country. However it will be very difficult for them to actually get into the country itself, but they prospect of having better living conditions and just a better life as a whole will mean they will try to get to America no matter what it takes for them to get there.
3)I think its the complete wrong way to respond to the migrant caravan as they're trying to get to a place to have a better life and any human who isn't living their best life will try to get to somewhere where they can live a better life. Therefore if Trump was reasonable and empathetic he would understand it's very unfair to then cut aid with Honduras just for trying to get a better life / living standards. However if he wanted to take a stance on these Honduran immigrants he should at least not allow them to enter the US, but not trying to cut off aid to Honduras as that's taking a way to aggressive stance to those people just trying to immigrate to another country. However if he wanted things like this to stop happening he should maybe give more monetary aid or just aid in general to Honduras to help the country get better as a whole and stop events of desperation like this from happening again and again. Because what he's doing is the complete wrong stance to take.
